The Cordouan lighthouse marks the entrance to the Gironde estuary. It is the oldest lighthouse in France still in activity. It was completed in 1611 and was given to Louis XIV by Colbert. It is here that the first Fresnel lens was installed. Formerly called the "Versailles of the seas", "the king of lighthouses", or "the lighthouse of kings", it was the first lighthouse to be classified as a historical monument in 1862. It is a unique lighthouse of which you will keep a wonderful memory when you visit it.
