The Pink Lake, in Senegal about 30 km north-east of Dakar, this shallow lagoon gets its color from the presence of microorganisms that produce a red pigment to resist the strong sunlight and its high salt concentration. The women have just unloaded the salt from the boats and dumped it on the edge of the lake where it will be whitened and dried in the sun.
